Christiano De Araujo Bathhouse Mural

Gay Village Church Street Mural Project

This mural off of Church St is by Christiano De Araujo on the side of a building at what used to be the oldest gay bar in the country (it closed in 2012). His mural was for World Pride 2014 when BMO sponsored a mural project in honor of the LGBTQ event. This icture was taken in December 2015.

This mural signifies the raid of several bathhouse in 1981 called “Operation Soap“. This moment has been compared to Stonewall in the United States as a turning point for the gay community.

Christiano De Araujo World Pride Mural

Gay Village Church Street Mural Project

This was done by Christiano De Araujo as well further up Church St for World Pride 2014. The mural is to show different parts of gay history. For example the men on the upper right hand side is to illustration the legalization of gay marriage in Canada in 2005.  The character on the upper left is to recognize Two-Spirited ““Two-spirited” refers to a person who has both a masculine and a feminine spirit, and is used by some First Nations people to describe their sexual, gender and/or spiritual identity.”

As I mentioned in a previous post Christiano uses an airbrusher so this mural was a long time in the making.

This is the outside of a drag bar in the gay village. Mural is by Elicser Elliott who did the entire building back in 2014. Again, this was apart of the Church St mural project that was sponsored by BMO for World Pride 2014. I remember when he did this mural – there was scaffolding all around the building for a month. (wish I had taken pictures back then)

Meera Sethi Church St Mural

Gay Village Church Street Mural Project

This mural by Meera Sethi is at the corner of Church and Wellesley street in the heart of the gay village. Says on the Church St Mural Project Site.. Meera “who has used South Asian textiles as inspiration for her mural” .. her “graphic work celebrates the history of the queer South Asian community “.

This photo was taken in October of 2016 – but there is a whole site dedicated to this project that has way better photos and information than I do.
