Painted Bell Box Murals Portfolio 2018

Catching up again with street art I found last year. These are all apart of the Bell Box Mural project (see end of post for more details). They painted in the summer of 2018 and some in the autumn. I only got to see a couple of the artist working live last year.

These are different from the traffic signal box program “Outside the Box” that the city runs. Some of the artists paint for both of the programs.

Again, I have posted some of these before.. but I’m sticking to a theme because I’m going to post these on Instagram as well..

Glen Guerin aka Noxious Street Art Bell Box

Toronto Street Art Graffiti

From the Bell Box Mural Facebook page:

Glen Guerin‘s mural at Markham St and Queen West in Toronto, produced in partnership with the West Queen West BIA.
“The theme given me was local musicians of the “Queen St. Days”. As a patron of the Gary’s Horseshoe days, then a regular on the “Queen St. scene of the 80’s” I thought of many, many artists I’d like to commemorate in a mural who inspired me as a young artist. Then it hit me, NASH THE SLASH! However, boxes are usually two panel, and who to compliment him, but his friend Carole Pope of Rough Trade. One guy in a car stopped and yelled out who they were, gave me a thumbs up and moved on. Another middle age woman with a thick accent told me she saw Rough Trade in Poland when she was younger (who knew?!). Others were curious and asked who they were and I explained the best I could. All in all, it was a fun and learning experience.””

This is by Ted Hamer.

From the Bell Box Facebook:

“Hundreds of people streamed by as I painted over the course of a few days. I had many people stop and show me photos of white squirrels in Trinity Bellwoods Park as well as a few people from the CAMH offices telling me that there are also white squirrels in their park. Every day around 3 pm parents would walk their kids by the box and everybody would stop and talk to me about the squirrels.”

From what I gather .. they choose a ward every year and send the artists to paint on the boxes in that area.

I found this on their Facebook:

“Artists painted 12 murals on Bell Canada outdoor utility boxes in the Trinity Spadina Ward 19 neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, in 2018 as part of the Bell Box Murals Project.

Artists were Jenn Kitagawa, Shelby McLeod, Erika James, Marie-Judith Jean-Louis, Cornelius Spek, Ghazaleh Rastgar, Jon McTavish, Ted Hamer, Steven Twigg, Tak Bui, Glen Guerin and Adrian Hayles”

This is what the program is all about:

“The Bell Boxes Murals Project is an independent, community-engaged art program of Community Matters Toronto, a non-profit community organization located in the St James Town neighbourhood of Toronto, produced in partnership with Bell Canada. Since 2009 artists from the Bell Boxes Murals Project have painted over 300 murals on Bell Canada outdoor utility boxes in 36 communities throughout Toronto, Southern Ontario and Quebec.

Their mission statement:

The Bell Box Murals Project is an innovative collaboration between private business, community organizations, local artists and local governments that benefits all members of the community:
â–ª Replaces graffiti and vandalism with original works of art â–ª Makes the streets more inviting to residents and visitors â–ª Provides a public art forum to reflect local culture and heritage â–ª Enhances residents’ sense of community â–ª Accessible to everyone, regardless of income or social stature â–ª Provides income and visibility for local artists “
